LAPD Closes Five Block Radius Downtown Due to Reported Rooftop Gunmen

The Los Angeles Police Department shut down streets and sidewalks in a five-square-block area of downtown this afternoon. The closure was a result of reports that men with guns had been spotted on the roof at the Huntington Hotel.

Four men with what appeared to be Tech 9 automatic hand guns were spotted on the roof and reported by concerned citizens. The men were in the sights of an LAPD sniper armed with an AR-15 (M-16) automatic rifle. Lt. Paul Vernon said "Had he pointed that gun at the officers, he would have lost his life,"

In the end it turned out that the weapons were in fact air rifles which closely resembled the Tech 9. Lt. Vernon said "From a technical standpoint, there is no crime, but I would classify this as felony stupid. No one should be on the roof of a downtown hotel with handguns, real or not."

-----------
On a personal note: This was one of my first opportunities to do real photojournalism work. My life goal is to be a photojournalist, and I was simply lucky that I was at the scene as it unfolded. I was treated as press and with much respect by the LAPD. This only helped to solidify my career aspirations.

Many thanks to the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department for doing a wonderful job today, and being respectful and courteous to the citizens (and photographers) in the area.

Pictures of a Scientology Protest

As I was getting ready to get on the Red Line at Sunset and Vermont I was suddenly confronted with an escalator full of masked, sign toting, anti-Scientology, demonstrators. I knew immediately by the masks that this was Anonymous, more specifically Project Chanology. After I snapped my first couple pictures I was confronted by a lady who seemed kind of like the den mother of this group. She wanted to know what my problem was and I explained that I just like to take pictures. She asked if I was a part of the church (Scientology) and I said that I wasn't. Once I mentioned the word Anonymous everything was fine and I was invited to come along.

Unfortunately the freshly charged batteries I had just put in my camera were not actually freshly charged. I ran out of battery and had to, literally, run to the store to get more. By the time I was done getting batteries I had to get on the train to go to an event I was originally on my way to.

Hollywood & Highland - Plus a random monkey

The picture of the stuffed monkey is from my street. This stuffed monkey just keeps showing up in random places along my street all week. I've started to take pictures whenever I see it; simply because I'm intrigued, or shall I say curious, about this monkey and his random travels.

The rest are from Hollywood and Highland. Just some stuff I took while out and about.

Chinatown

A few pictures I took in Chinatown on a rainy day. The sun came out for about 5 minutes and I tried to get as many shots as I could. Out of the many I took, only a few were worth showing to the world.

Week 2 - Photos that didn't make it on WeeklyPhoto.net

I started a new website, WeeklyPhoto.net, where I post a new photo every week. The point of the site is to be spending more time every week taking photos. I'm trying to always post a picture I took the week before posting. When you shoot that many photos per week there's bound to be a few photos you liked but didn't make the cut. I figured that I can start posting the weekly photos that didn't make the cut on Posterous.
